Erectile dysfunction (the inability to get and maintain an erection that is sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse) is a worldwide condition and its prevalence is anticipated to increase from 152 million in 1995 to 322 million by 2025.
Available data shows that erectile dysfunction affects 50 percent of men ages 40-70 in the United States and is considered an important public health problem by the National Institutes of Health. In Asia, it is estimated to affect up to 37% of Thai males (40-70 years old), and in a survey conducted in Singapore on men more than 30 years old, a prevalence rate of 51% was obtained. Also, the self-reported prevalence of ED in Malaysia reported to be about 27%.
In spite of these unfortunate observations, sadly, due to taboos, cultural restrictions and some other factors, only 10% of patients with ED seek medical attention.
Availability of Viagra (Sildenafil) and Cialis (Tadalafil) as efficacious intervention for ED have proven to be a valuable tool, but these drugs are not without limitations. The problem is that these drugs are limited to a certain group of patients due to their side effects. For example, taking Cialis or Viagra with a nitrate medicine can cause a sudden and serious decrease in blood pressure. Therefore, the drugs are not recommended for patients with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, and for over 50 years old. Furthermore, these drugs, although can help achieve an erection, they have no impact on men’s semen quality and pregnancy rates (although decreased semen quality is responsible for 25% of all infertility issues).
These observations have led experts to examine agents that can improve erection, but have a positive impact on men’s semen quality and pregnancy rates. Herbal medicine is assumed to be advantageous, because it is natural and much safer. Moreover, it can be used for maintaining general well-being and improve men’s sperm count. & motility and consequently improve the pregnancy rate.
Of these herbs are Maca, which found to increases seminal volume and sperm count per ejaculum and enhance sperm motility, Ttribulus Terrestris, which has been clinically proven to improve sexual desire and enhance erection, and Horny Goat Weed, which is acknowledged in the Chinese Herbal Medicine for patterns of kidney yang deficiency with such symptoms as impotence and infertility.
